We held three meetings in April instead of the usual two. Our first meeting carried the loose theme, ‘Force of Nature’ and John Murphy gave an impressive maiden speech about volcanos, earthquakes and other natural disasters. At our second meeting we broke with the tradition of three main speeches per meeting and instead held two mini debates on the subjects, ‘The World Would Be A Better Place If We Knew What The Future Held’ and ‘Sutton Park Is A Better Place With The Cows Present’.
The jewel in the crown of our April meetings came on the 28th when we hosted The Blarney Stone competition. Four-person teams from Sutton, Bromsgrove and Stourbridge provided great entertainment speaking to the theme, Past, Present and Future. Sutton Coldfield were ably represented by Gary Allmark, David Gough, Sally Jenkins and Claire Worsfold-Morris (l to r in picture). The competition winners were, once again, the extremely polished speakers from Stourbridge Speakers’ Club; however we learned a lot from watching their performance and maybe next year we’ll bring the trophy to Sutton!
Competitions are an extra challenge but not the main focus of our Speakers’ Club meetings. The aim of Sutton Coldfield Speakers’ Club is to build confidence. Members receive constructive and supportive feedback to help them progress in their speaking career. We each take a turn at chairing the meeting, speaking and evaluating the speeches of other members. This creates a confidence which not only aids public speaking but also enhances other parts of our lives, both personal and at work.
If you would like to improve your public speaking skills, become more confident or simply take up a new hobby with a friendly bunch of people – please come along and see what we can offer!
We meet twice a month on Thursday evenings at Aston Wood Golf Club, Blake Street. We meet at 7:45 pm and the meeting starts promptly at 8 pm. Dates of meetings are on the Calendar Page.
