July saw the last meeting of Sutton Coldfield Speakers’ Club before our summer break and it was lovely to welcome the three visitors who came along to see how we operate.
Our chair for the evening was Craig Collinge and it was his first time in this role. Craig did a sterling job of running the first half of the evening which included two pre-prepared speeches and one impromptu speech. The speeches were all seven to eight minutes long and were evaluated by other club members. The evaluations were constructive and highlighted the strengths of each speech, whilst signposting any areas of weakness that might be improved next time around.
After a short break in the bar, Gloria Banner took on the role of Topics chair, also for the first time, and ran the second part of the evening. She asked members to speak off the cuff for two to three minutes on a range of travel-related subjects and she did a great job at getting everyone involved and speaking.
The aim of Sutton Coldfield Speakers’ Club is to build confidence. Each member receives supportive feedback to help them progress in their speaking career. We take turns at chairing the meeting, speaking and evaluating the speeches of other members. This creates a confidence which not only aids public speaking but also enhances other parts of our lives, both personal and in the workplace.
If you would like to improve your public speaking skills, become more confident or simply take up a new hobby with a friendly bunch of people – please come along and see what we can offer! Our next meeting is Thursday 22nd September. We’ll also have a stall at Sutton Expo in Sutton Coldfield Town Centre on Saturday 24th September, if you’d like to come and chat to us then.
All our meetings are held at Aston Wood Golf Club, Blake Street. We meet at 7:45 pm and the meeting starts promptly at 8 pm. For further details please contact Pam Collins on 0121 3556390.
