The suggested theme of our June meeting was ‘Inventions and Discoveries’.
Richard Larkin told us about the history of beer and ended with some useful tips on beating a hangover. Gary Allmark talked about ‘The Allure of Gadgets’, especially all those amazing things advertised in the catalogues that drop out of the weekend newspapers. Sally Jenkins went off theme and gave us a step by step guide to writing a romantic novel set in the Gracechurch shopping centre.
All three speakers received useful feedback on their strengths and weaknesses.
In the second half of the meeting we had eight short impromptu speeches on topics set by David Gough. The subjects were challenging but, as always, it was amazing how members rose to the occasion when put on the spot! The subject of ‘Yellow Lines’ turned into a talk about driving tests and our speaker on ‘Nylon’ told us about its property of ‘wicking’.
We were delighted to have two guests present at the meeting and both joined in our impromptu speeches, giving creditable performances. We hope to see them again soon.
Our next meeting is July 23rd 2015 and visitors are welcome.
