Meeting Report – July 2017

Sutton Coldfield Speakers’ Club held its last meeting of the 2016/17 season in July and we had a full program of speakers.

July 2017 Meeting

Tom Hughes made his first speech, taking up the evening’s theme of ‘Waste not, want not’, he spoke about the history of this proverb and his experiences as a child of having to ‘make do’. Tom was congratulated on an excellent start to his speaking career.
The second half of our meeting is always a session of impromptu speaking. This time we were given an extra challenge and asked to stand away from the safety of the lectern and include big gestures in our speeches. In addition, one member practised his retirement speech, in advance of giving it for real at work. Members are always welcome to practise ‘real’ speeches, either in full or part. Feedback from the rest of the club can help perfect such presentations and give confidence.
Ammo Singh gave us a useful Tip of the Week. He advised that after each club meeting we should review our own performance and the feedback we’d received, note it down and then review it before our next speaking slot.
The evening was a lovely end to the season and we look forward to seeing everyone again at our first meeting of the 2017/18 season on Thursday September 14th. If you would like to improve your public speaking skills, become more confident, take up a new hobby with a friendly bunch of people or simply want to see how we operate – please come along to one of our meetings and see what we can offer!
Our meetings are held twice a month on Thursdays (apart from holiday times), upstairs at Aston Wood Golf Club, Blake Street. We arrive from 7:45 pm and the meeting starts promptly at 8 pm.
